The Brief
ThirdSpace is a non-profit community center located in Brooklyn, New York. The center is a 1,100 sqft loft, a space for the community to gather and feel safe at home.

A clear challenge when designing the space is that it would need to flex for our large variety of different programs. It would need to be easily re-organized and structures for groups big and small, performances, panels, workshops and more.
Outcome
Given the purpose is to make members feel close to home, I used furnishings to established visual boundaries that broke the open space up into rooms that feel like a home: a living area, dining room, kitchen, and reading nook.

With the goal of bringing tranquility to a over-stimulated New Yorker, I maintained a neutral palette when furnishing. I designed the major gathering points to be centered around the space's most loved quality: the wall of windows.

Lastly, I designed and fabricated custom coffee tables, a kitchen island, and shelving for the space.

A NOTE
The following OBJECTS BLEND THE BOUNDARIES OF FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE AND SCULPTURES.
Harmony
A blend of wood and galvanized steel, this coffee table explores the relationship between materials.
Dual
This table explores the duality of the material. While steel is an industrial material, its properties allow it to bend into organic forms. It can be organic and sharp. Industrial yet human.

Made from only a thin 16 gauge cold-rolled steel, its can support up to 90 lbs. It holds space below for storage. All sizes and circular curves used are proportioned to one another.
Continuous Structures
A Family of 5
This collection's identity is stemmed from Bruno Munari's concept of continuous structures, in which only 1 or 2 elements exist, and it is up to the end user to re-arrange these elements to their liking.

These objects are vessels, and can hold anything from fruit and keys to magazines or phones. Their intended use it up to the end user. Made from 2mm think steel, they are sturdy, and hold up to 25lbs.
Combinations are endless, but the following five
were chosen for their proportions and individual character.
Both A & B curves are made from the same size sheet of material.
This not only streamlines manufacturing, it also creates coherency between the pieces.
Below are prototypes I fabricated in raw cold-rolled steel, and do not reflect intended finishings.
Each structure is made up of
a combination of curves A & B.
